Akron Galley Boys
The Akron RubberDucks will become the Akron Galley Boys on June 27th and 28th, 2025 The term Galley Boys refers to the iconic hamburger cooks who worked in small galley kitchens (similar to what might be found on ships) to feed Akron and much of Northeast Ohio for more than 90 years. Drive-in restaurants were a big part of Akron’s fast food boom in the late 1940s through the 1980s. During this time period drive-in restaurants like Swenson’s, Skyway and Dilly’s started in Akron and expanded their locations across Ohio. These restaurants have unique narrow shaped designs and sell their delicious food offerings to patrons who drive into the parking lots and receive their meals from “car hops” that sprint from car to car. The food at these drive-ins is made by cooks affectionately known as galley boys because of the galley style kitchen they work in. Swenson’s even honored these cooks by naming one of their signature menu items after them.

Akron White French
The Akron RubberDucks will rebrand to the Akron White French for one-night only on Friday, July 19 as part of the RubberDucks created Only in Akron series. White French salad dressing is uniquely an Akron thing! When most people think of French salad dressing, they picture a bright orange hue and a sweet, tangy taste. However, Akronites have been topping their lettuce leaves with an entirely different dressing that has its origins in the Rubber City. White French is a smooth creamy textured, tangy salad dressing with hints of garlic flavors and, as the name suggests, a white hue. This unique smooth salad topper is not often found outside the confines of Summit County. The origin of who first began to serve White French salad dressing is up to debate, but Papa Joe’s (owned and operated by the Iacomini family for generations) restaurant was one of the first. Some Akron foodies contend the old Stouffer’s restaurant at the Summit Mall was the first place to serve the unique dressing, but both sides can agree the salad dressing originated in Akron and has become an area staple ever since. White French salad dressing is served by many Akron area restaurants, and Akron’s own Ya Ya’s Salad Dressing is the only company that bottles White French to sell in grocery stores.

Akron Black Tyrites
In order to properly celebrate and honor the original Akron Black Tyrites, the RubberDucks created logos and uniforms in the style of what the team might have worn in 1933. These designs and new uniforms were created and planned to be unveiled during the 2020 season to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Negro League Baseball. The RubberDucks will continue to honor the Black Tyrites for seasons to come by wearing the uniforms for special games.
